Thrifty Thursday - August 9

For the past couple of weeks, I've started building back our stockpile for school coming up. That means cracker packs, and individual applesauces, granola bars and pasta sauce, and soup for quick dinners. Nothing is worse than coming home from a long day of school and having to spend a long time fixing something to eat. With that said, I may be putting "Thrifty Thursday" on hold for a while, or bumping it back to once a month, as school starts back and I become much busier! Here are this week's totals:

PUBLIX

Total Spent: $32.02

Thrifty Thursday - June 28

This was a pretty big shopping week, which is somewhat surprising, since we got a new batch of co-op produce on Saturday. However, we bought a lot of baking products to help us with that produce, and I stocked up on lots of soup this week, as it was FINALLY on sale again after months! I was able to get free Pringles at CVS, as well as a free Dole Smoothie Shaker at Publix. Here are this week's totals:

PUBLIX
Total Spent: $32.36
Total Saved: $31.10

WALMART

Thrifty Thursday - June 14

Well, can't say that I stayed on budget this week, BUT I've been quite under for a few weeks, so it evens out (I think!). I didn't get a whole lot from Publix, but I had to get some higher priced items, like toilet paper, multivitamins, and bodywash and deodorant for Jamie. I also stocked up on Coke since Publix had another of their Buy 2 Get 1 Free sales. Here are the totals for this week:

PUBLIX
Total Spent: $42.13
Total Saved: $25.77

CVS
Total Spent: $14.98
Total Saved: $10.07 (+$5ECB)

Thrifty Thursday - June 7

This was a pretty decent shopping week for us. I got a 3 pack of Dr. Scholl's insoles for 33% of its original price, as well as free Uncle Ben's rice. We stocked up on coffee creamer for Jamie, and got some Bird's Eye Voila meals, which are yummy! Here's the totals for the week:

PUBLIX
Total Spent: $22.82
Total Saved: $33.13

CVS
Total Spent: $4.80

Thrifty Thursday - May 31

I'm going to change up the format for Thrifty Thursday for a while, to more of a narrative, rather than a breakdown. I'll tell you about any super deals I got, as well as still spell out the totals.

This week wasn't a really big shopping week for us. Publix didn't have a whole lot on sale that we like, but I did get FREE Cool Whip and stocked up on Mott's 100% Natural Apple Juice, which is absolutely delicious! We also had to get a few "needs" at Wal Mart though, so that cut into our savings a bit. So here's the final:

TOTAL SPENT: $34.60

Savvy Saving

As you all have learned, I am really enjoying grocery savings these days. I saved 60% at Publix and 53% at Kroger yesterday! However, due to the fact that we technically are a one income household these days, I wanted to share other ways we are trying to save as well... and maybe they will help you too!

FOOD:
Let's start with groceries, just because I have had more questions since my previous savings posts. I want to make one thing clear: you don't have to coupon to save money on groceries! If you don't want to deal with that hassle, because it can be time consuming, just focus on shopping the sale items. You'll automatically save 20-30% just based on that.  However, if you do want to find coupons, a great place is the internet. You don't always have to go buy the newspaper every Sunday. Here are some places for you to check out:

Coupon sites: coupons.com
                       redplum.com
                       couponnetwork.com
                       smartsource.com

Grocery sites: Just about every grocery store now has printable coupons or electronic coupons that are specific to them. Target, Kroger, Publix, Food Lion, and even Walmart are some examples.

Product sites: Many products now have somewhere on their site for promotions. You can usually get a handful of coupons, maybe more if you're lucky.

Facebook: It's not a bad idea to "like" your favorite products' pages, so that you will be notified when they put up coupons or free samples for their products.

Samples: Free samples often come with coupons for the full size versions of the product. The best part is that you get to try the product for free first! A good place to find these is http://www.heyitsfree.net  They pull them from all over the internet and put them in one place. Even better, you can sign up for their daily digest, where they will send you one email a day that lists all the free samples for the day. (I also happen to know the guy that runs this site, and he doesn't post anything that makes you "do" something for the freebie)

CLOTHES/HOUSEHOLD:
I rarely go clothes shopping these days, but when I do, I make sure that I have some kind of discount in hand. Lots of major stores allow you to sign up for emails from them, and some of those contain coupons for percentages off or dollars off a certain amount. Facebook is also great for getting high value coupons. Old Navy has been great lately, with 30% off a single item, or 20% off an entire purchase.

Online shopping is also great for this. There are coupon codes or promotional codes for tons of websites. A couple of weeks ago, Jamie was shopping for new checks. The ones he wanted were over $20. I suggested we do a Google search for promo code. We found one, plugged it in, and suddenly the checks were only six or seven dollars! It really is worth it to take the short time to search on the internet to see if you can find a discount. It can save you so much money!

UTILITIES:
We have been looking for so many little ways to save that would add up, and one of those places is through utilities. Many of these have been stated over and over, but we can always use a refresher!

Electricity/Water: Handwash dishes as much as possible, and only run the dishwasher if you have a full load. Only run the washing machine with a full load, and wash with cold water instead of warm or hot. Keep the thermostat at 68 (fall/winter) or 78 (spring/summer). Use sunlight as late into the day as possible. Open the blinds!

Cable/Internet/Phone: Take a look at what you're using and what you can cut back on. We watch a lot of television (or I do anyway) in our house, so we are considering switching from Time Warner Cable to AT&T U-Verse. It's cheaper, for more services. We also have our phone plan with AT&T, so bundling is a good option. We saved a good bit of money switching to the same cell phone carrier.

ENTERTAINMENT:
Lots of daily deal sites have popped up in the past couple of years. Living Social and Groupon are two of the biggest. You can save 50% or more on restaurants and other entertainment. Restaurant.com also allows you to buy gift certificates at a fraction of their worth.

If you like movies, obviously actually going to the big screen isn't a great option for the price. Netflix's monthly DVD charge for one at a time, or streaming option is less than the price of one movie ticket. If you don't watch movies often, but still want to see them once in a while, Redbox or Blockbuster kiosks are cheap for a movie night at home. You can even find free rental codes online, making it an even better deal!

Free music streaming can be found courtesy of Spotify, Pandora, IHeartRadio, YouTube, and many other places on the internet.

Don't forget about the public library! Not only do they have tons of books (duh) and magazines, but they have lots of movies and CDs too!

Whew! That was a lot of information to absorb! I hope it was helpful and you found at least one new thing you can try. What do you think? What are some ways that you save?

Adventures in Couponing

I've been wanting to write about couponing, but wasn't sure how to approach it. However, after today's haul, I have to share!

For me, couponing goes all the way back to when I was little. My dad used to do the grocery shopping for our family and he ALWAYS had coupons. I remember him cutting out stacks and his little coupon folder he had-- and now that I think about it, it occurs to me that I may have the same one! I have no idea about his strategies: stacking coupons, matching sales, etc, I just remember the kitchen bar being covered in coupons!

So, I guess it was inevitable I would end up in the world of couponing. Back around March or so, I randomly started receiving coupons in the mail. I still don't know how it happened, but that started the ball rolling. At that point, I was only shopping at Wal-Mart. It's across the street from our house, and I am all about convenience, plus the fact that's where I had done all my grocery shopping since I went to college. A few weeks later, I started to look around at "Southern Savers," which I had heard much about. There I discovered printable coupons! I honestly didn't know there was such a thing, but it was an exciting discovery. For the next couple of months, I used them when they matched stuff already on my list. I had read that grocery stores were really the way to go, but didn't have the time to match up everything during the school year.

In June though, with the prospect of no job, I decided to get serious about saving. I chose Publix as my store because that is where I had heard the most people talk about saving a ton. Kroger pops up every once in a while too. My weekly grocery budget is about $75 and it is amazing how much farther I can stretch that now!

Here are some things I do to get the most out of my saving.

1. Keep a running spreadsheet of Walmart prices to make sure something that is "on sale" somewhere else can't be bought at a cheaper price there.
2. Sign up for the Southern Savers "Coupon Advisory" newsletter. She sends out a list of new printable coupons daily so I never miss one!
3. I have two lists: one for Publix, which consists of ONLY things on sale, and I try to have coupons for as many of those things as possible; the other list is of needs, things we've run out of, and I get those at Walmart, because they'll be cheaper than something not on sale at Publix. Some weeks, such as this one, I have an extra list for Kroger. I only go there if they have super cheap deals or a large number of items on sale I would buy. Since I do my shopping all in one day, it's kind of out of the way and not worth it otherwise.

For proof of savings, check out what I got at Publix this week:
1 Breyer's Blast Ice Cream
1 Mott's Strawberry Applesauce 6 pk
2 Bird's Eye Steamfresh Frozen Vegetables
2 Boxes of Cheez Its
1 Box of Wheat Thins
5 Bags of Chex Mix
2 Tomatoes
4 Kraft Salad Dressings
4 V8 Splashes
2 Jars of Mt. Olive Pickles
3 12 pack bottles of Lipton Citrus Green Tea

PAID: $35. 68
SAVED: $52. 79

That's 60 %! $39.79 of those savings came strictly from the items being on sale. I had $13.00 worth of coupons.

If you want to try couponing too-- and I highly recommend it!-- here is what you should do.

1. Go to SouthernSavers.com. At the top, click on her "Learn to Coupon" tab. That is really all the basic information you need to get started. She even has some videos, if things aren't clear. Make sure you sign up for the "Coupon Advisory" and "Daily Deals" newsletters. This way, you don't have to constantly check the site to see what's new.
2. Pick one store to focus on-- I am partial to Publix. I NEVER shopped there before I started couponing because they were so expensive. Their "buy one get one free" sales can't be beat though! And the cool thing about those is that you don't have to buy two. You can buy one and get it half price.
3. Remember that most grocery stores (not Food Lion) will double all coupons up to 50 cents. That means you can get a dollar off one item if your coupon is for 50 cents. I have also heard that Bi Lo is now doubling coupons up to 60 cents, but haven't tried it out for myself.
4. DON'T buy it just because you have a coupon for it! I made that mistake a little at first, but quickly corrected it.

Anyway, although it takes some time, it's SO worth it! I get so excited about grocery shopping now, knowing that I'm saving so much money! It took me about six weeks to start saving more than I was spending, and just about every week I do that now at Publix. I am by no means an expert, but if you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to help! Happy couponing!
